Seminar: Managing Continence in Schools

Children with disabilities are also more likely to have problems with daytime wetting, constipation and soiling after toilet training. All of these can be difficult to manage at home and even more so at school.  In recognition of this, Davina Richardson, Children’s Continence Nurse at Bladder & Bowel UK will be delivering a seminar on Managing Continence in Schools at this year’s Kidz to Adultz Middle on Thursday 15^th March. The seminar is aimed at parents, carers and professionals who work with children who attend mainstream or special schools and have a continence problem. • Bladder and bowel problems in childhood and young people are very common.
• Problems including difficulties with toilet training, wetting and/or soiling affect up to 28% of all children and adolescents at any one time.
• Younger children are affected more often than older children, although problems can happen at any age.

We also have a wide range of information booklets and resources on our website, which are freely downloadable for all. The team will be bringing some of our resources along for you to have a look though on the stand along with a display of continence products.

Davina will also be speaking in seminar room 2 at 12.30 on the topic of Continence in Schools so please do pop along to this free seminar. Many children suffer from problems with using the toilet or have delayed toilet training.

Davina tells us that:

These issues are more common in children with additional needs and can cause stress and embarrassment to the child and family and concerns to staff when children are of school age.

Davina’s session will inform families and professionals on how they are able to work together to meet the needs of the individual child.

This is an important topic to discuss… my seminar will consider issues about what causes bladder and bowel problems in children with additional needs, how wetting and soiling should be managed in schools, how schools can support children who have not been toilet trained, the different roles of the family, the child, the school and other professionals in supporting children at school, and how to manage when there are disagreements such as about responsibilities or whether or not the child is ready to start toilet training.
